Ambient Background Noise and Early Development

Abstract

Evidence is presented on the question of whether the physical environment must be mediated by social interactions in order to influence development, and on those dimensions of the physical environment which are most salient for early cognitive development. The relation to development of one dimension of the physical environment --ambient background noise- is utilized to illustrate the nature of early environment action.
