Environmental Education for Community Action
Abstract
This article traces the roots of Urban Environmental Education in England and concludes that education is the prerequisite to participation in decision making. It describes the Urban Studies movement and the centers which have been developed as a catalyst and a resource for teachers and the community. Newcastle Architecture Workshop is one such center and their work is used to illustrate how the environmental education and educating for participation in being undertaken in schools within many subject disciplines. This is particularly pertinent in relation to the UK National Curriculum, but more important to enable pupils to acquire the skills and knowledge and become able to take action in the environment with confidence, intelligence and sensitivity.
