Abstract

Non forceful water techniques and a mother's relationship to her child is contrasted to the techniques of traditional stroke instruction ad YMCA sessions for training children in the water environment. The strongest motivator for young children is shown to be the strong bond between the child and the parent. From this relationship grows the potential for child developed stroke adaptations and/or inventions as well as the basis for exploratory play sessions. Play in the aquatic environment leads to perceptions of more efficient patterns of movement and ultimately to the development of individual strokes. These accomplishments are based on a Water Weavers' 1) basic premise, 2) a Water Weavers' organizational goal, and 3) a Water Weavers' objective. An educational program for parents is also outlined. These instructional materials and especially the strong child-parent relationship are viewed as cornerstones to a strong program designed to achieve water adaptation for young children.
