Abstract

William Dole's painted collages are formal compositional inventions, balancing pictorial elements and sensitive saturations of color-form with unintelligible signs-the calligraphy of type, symbol, diagram, and handwritingwh ich seduce your eyes and provoke uncertain readings. The artist also comments on his own work.

    William Dole has been professor of art at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA 93105) since 1949. He has had one-man exhibitions in various European cities as well as throughout the United States; his work is found in many major museums in this country.
  • Gerald Nordland
    Gerald Nordland is director of the Frederick S. Wight Art Gallery at the University of California, Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA 90024).
