Cyrillic Gothic: Formal Modifications in the Design of a Russian Sans-serif Typeface

Abstract

Four series for text and display composition were designed for a new Cyrillic sans-serif typeface. Historic and existing Cyrillic typefaces are assessed. Illustrations show the modification of individual characters toward an over-all consistent design of the entire alphabet.

  • André Gürtler
    André Gürtler (Im Mühleboden 72, CH-4106 Therwil, Switzerland ) is a teacher of letterform design at the School of Design, Basle. He is also partner-with Christian Mengelt- of Team '77 JLetterform Research & Design, a studio that deals with the entire field of letterform design. He has spent several years in England and France working in the area of letterform and type design in different studios and companies.

    Christian Mengel t has his own graphic design studio and since 1972 has taught the design of letterforms at the School of Design, Basle.
